Where to stay in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, from Trieste to the Natisone hills

Five places to stay in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, including hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs in Trieste, Monfalcone, San Vito al Tagliamento and the Natisone Valleys. It suits anyone touring by car, stopping for good food, or wanting to explore Trieste on foot and find a simple, honest bed for the night.

Where to stay in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, area by area

In Friuli-Venezia Giulia the five places I suggest are split between the coast around Trieste, the Tagliamento plain and the mountains of the Natisone Valleys. There are few properties, but they cover three different ways of doing this trip: a seaside city, a stop on the road, and a mountain pause.

Trieste and Monfalcone

To see Trieste on foot, it is best to sleep in the centre. Monfalcone, on the other hand, is a practical alternative if you arrive by plane or are travelling for work.

  • Brilliant Camere, in Trieste. A small hotel with six rooms in a city-centre building, between the station and Piazza Unità d'Italia. Guests describe the rooms as refurbished, clean and quiet. Be aware if you have a lot of luggage, as there is no lift.
  • B&B Porto Vecchio, in Trieste. Simple rooms in an old building on Via Carlo Ghega, a short walk from the central station and the main squares. Reviews are mixed, so read them before booking.
  • Tre Camere, in Monfalcone. A small guesthouse on the Corso del Popolo, with air-conditioned rooms and Wi-Fi, near Trieste airport. Simple and convenient for work or a short stop.

Plain and Natisone Valleys

Away from the coast the region changes, with quiet roads, small towns and the mountains in the background. Here a car is almost essential.

  • Affittacamere La Corte di Rosa, in San Vito al Tagliamento. It has a garden and terrace, a short walk from the centre. Clean and roomy rooms, a sweet and savoury breakfast and attentive hosts. Suited to anyone exploring the area by car.
  • Hotel & Restaurant Al Trivio, in San Leonardo. A hotel with a restaurant and views of the Natisone Valleys mountains. Works for a stop with good Friulian cooking, less so for anyone looking for impeccable service and low prices.

What kind of accommodation you find in Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Guesthouses and small B&Bs predominate here, alongside a hotel with a restaurant. These are simple places, often run by families, aimed at anyone wanting a clean bed and a good starting point rather than hotel-style services.

You won't find large resorts or charming villas among the places I cover. If you are dreaming of a luxury holiday in this region, you will need to look elsewhere. If you need an honest base for a stop or a weekend, there is plenty to choose from.

Which accommodation to choose for your trip

The choice depends mainly on how you travel and what you want to see. This table sorts the most common cases.

Trieste, plain or mountains, where to start

If it is your first trip, I would start in Trieste. It is the city with the most to see on foot and the widest choice of places to eat, and from there the region makes more sense. Accommodation in the centre lets you leave the car behind and move between the station and the main squares on foot.

Anyone who loves quiet can instead head for the Tagliamento plain or the Natisone Valleys, where the pace is slower and Friulian food is the main reason to stop. Either way, avoid expecting too much from a single base, and plan the distances calmly.

When to visit Friuli-Venezia Giulia and how to get around

The region is best visited in spring and autumn, when it is pleasant to be outdoors and the days are comfortable both in the city and in the mountains. Summer suits the coast best, while winter has a quieter charm, especially for anyone after mountains and good food.

To get around, the car is the most flexible option, especially outside Trieste. In the city, the station and centre are close together and much can be done on foot. If you arrive by plane, note that the airport is convenient for Monfalcone and the coast.
