Where to stay in Piedmont, between lakes, hills and alpine valleys

Fourteen places to stay in Piedmont, from B&Bs, hotels, farm stays and an inn, spread across Turin and its valleys, the lakes, Monferrato and the Cuneo area. A region for quiet and good food, for couples, for anyone travelling by car, bike or on foot, and for city work trips.

How to choose where to stay in Piedmont

Piedmont is a region of very different landscapes, with the Alps, lakes, wine hills and one big city. It is best to choose the type of trip first and then the area, because almost everything depends on that.

I split it into four areas. Turin with the valleys and the Cuneo area, the lakes and the north-east, and Monferrato with Asti and Alessandria, each with a very distinct character.

Where to stay in Piedmont, area by area

I have grouped the places by proximity, so you can start with the area that interests you. You will find mostly small, family-run places, often in the countryside, and a few hotels in the cities and by the lake.

Turin, the valleys and Cuneo

Turin is the choice for anyone who wants a city, trains and museums, while the valleys around it suit those looking for mountains and home cooking.

  • Hotel Giulio Cesare, in Turin. A hotel on Largo Giulio Cesare with the tram stop right outside, clean rooms, a breakfast that guests appreciate and parking on site. The area divides guests, so read the reviews first.
  • Hotel Napoleon, in Turin. A small hotel on Via XX Settembre, a short walk from Porta Nuova station and the historic centre. Simple rooms with dated furnishings and friendly staff.
  • Agriturismo Il Runch Di Majrano Luca, in Viù. A mountain property with rooms that have balconies, a restaurant and a garden. Guests praise the welcome and the breakfast with jams and honey.
  • Stella d'Italia camere e bar caffetteria, in Sparone. Family-run in the middle of the village, with spacious rooms, a generous breakfast, private parking and a sun terrace. Popular with hikers and cyclists.
  • B&B Giravento, in Borgo San Dalmazzo. Modern rooms, a carefully kept breakfast area and a garden with a terrace. It has a garage for motorbikes, so it works well for anyone travelling by two wheels or coming to ski.

Lakes and the north-east

Between Lake Maggiore, the Valsesia and the Biellese, you will find cooler spots that suit walks and boat trips.

  • Sempione Boutique Hotel, in Stresa. A family hotel facing the water and close to the ferry pier. The building is a few years old, and some guests find the bathrooms small.
  • Osteria delle 3V, in Gignese. A small inn with a restaurant and rooms, a few steps from the Borromean Islands. Its strong point is the mountain cooking, but not everyone accepts card payments.
  • B&B Le Coccinelle, in Grignasco. With a garden, private parking and free Wi-Fi, it is a handy base for the Valsesia, Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore. You can travel with a dog too.
  • B&B Monte Bo Biella, in Biella. Quiet rooms, parking on site and a breakfast with homemade products and a view over the valley. Calm without being far from the town.

Monferrato, Asti and Alessandria

This is the Piedmont of hills, villages and farmhouses, with places that suit a slow break.

  • Canonica dei Templari, in Piazzano. A former canonry, restored, among the Monferrato hills, with a few elegant rooms, a garden terrace and a jacuzzi. For couples and walkers.
  • Agriturismo Cascina Borio, in Villafranca d'Asti. Family-run, with spacious rooms, a restaurant and a garden. Opinions are very divided, and it is not the place for anyone who wants modern rooms.
  • La Cascina Grossa, in Cascinagrossa. A bed and breakfast in a nineteenth-century farmhouse, with a large garden, a pool and spacious rooms. Good for anyone moving between Liguria and Monferrato.
  • Hotel Il Vecchio Vapore, in Villalvernia. A hotel with a restaurant and pizzeria, air-conditioned rooms, free parking and pets allowed. A convenient stop for those travelling by car.
  • B&B La Casetta di Lina, in Villaromagnano. A small property with three rooms in the countryside, with a garden, a terrace and parking. Quiet, a generous breakfast and a caring host.

What kinds of places to stay in Piedmont

In Piedmont, country bed and breakfasts and farm stays prevail, and the breakfast often makes the difference. Real hotels are mostly found in Turin, in Stresa and along the main through roads.

There are also inns with restaurants, useful if you want to eat well without getting back in the car. If you are after city hotel standards you will find them mainly in Turin, while in the hills the host's welcome matters more.

When to go and how to get around Piedmont

Spring and autumn are excellent for the hills and villages, when the countryside is lovely and the seasonal cooking is at its best. Summer works for the lakes and high ground, while winter makes sense for skiing in the valleys.

Turin is easy to explore on foot and by public transport, and it is also convenient by train. For everything else, hills, valleys and lakes, you will almost always need a car, and most places have parking. If you prefer two wheels, some properties welcome bikes and motorbikes.
