Where to stay in Campania, from Naples and Cilento to the inland villages

Twenty-five places in Campania, including B&Bs, hotels, farm stays and a hostel, spread across Naples and its surroundings, the Sorrento coast, Caserta, the Sannio and Cilento. The region suits anyone who wants cities and ruins, but also quiet in the countryside or a sea away from the crowds, ideally by car.

Where to stay in Campania, by area

Campania has five very different areas to sleep in: Naples and its surroundings, the Sorrento coast, Caserta, the Sannio and Irpinia, and Cilento. Below you will find every place I have gathered, grouped by proximity, so you can choose the area first and then the room.

Naples, Pozzuoli, Portici and Pompeii

These are the most practical bases for museums, excavations and the ports for the islands. In Naples you choose between the centre and the hilly neighbourhoods, while the surroundings suit anyone arriving by car.

  • B&B Aminei Metrò, in Naples. A family-run bed and breakfast opposite the Colli Aminei metro stop. It is not in the middle of the centre, but the metro gets you to the monuments.
  • B&B Simy, in Naples. Apartments with a bedroom, living room and fitted kitchen near Stazione Centrale, handy if you arrive by train.
  • Villetta Capodimonte, in Naples. A garden, private parking and rooms with terraces in the Capodimonte area. For visiting the city and then relaxing in the greenery, not for staying a stone's throw from the centre.
  • Terrazza Don Mario B&B, in Pozzuoli. A terrace with sea views and a shared kitchen, near the station and the port, useful for Ischia, Procida and Naples.
  • Hostel Portici, in Portici. A hostel with a garden, a bar and a party room, suited to anyone on a tight budget who is not looking for quiet. Reviews on cleanliness are mixed.
  • Abalon Pompei Resort, in Pompeii. A hotel near the motorway exit, with a large private car park. Liked for its location and staff, less so for breakfast.
  • B&B Pompeii Luxury, in Pompeii. Air-conditioned rooms, a well-regarded host and free parking, but reviews on cleanliness are very divided.

Sorrento coast

Just one address, but well placed for anyone who wants to be near the gulf without sleeping in the heart of the town.

  • B&B L'angolo di campagna, in Piano di Sorrento. A quiet, rural spot close to the coast, with a garden, parking and a terrace overlooking the gulf.

Caserta and around

The Reggia di Caserta is why almost everyone comes here. Places to stay split between the centre near the station and the villages around it, where parking is easier.

  • Al Centro Luxury Home, in Caserta. A B&B in a period building in the pedestrian centre, a few steps from the Reggia, with spacious rooms and a carefully prepared breakfast.
  • B&B Da nonna Marisa, in Caserta. Near the Reggia, with a terrace, a shared lounge and an Italian breakfast. Opinions on cleanliness and bathrooms are divided.
  • Suisse Hotel, in Caserta. A small family-run hotel near the station, with clean rooms and breakfast at a nearby bar.
  • B&B Da Giovanni, in Casapulla. Air-conditioned, with private parking. Guests praise the cleanliness and welcome, but breakfast is taken at a bar nearby.
  • Casa Miccio B&B, in Sant'Angelo in Formis. New, with a private bathroom, air conditioning, breakfast included and parking. Ideal for anyone travelling by car.
  • Agriturismo Le Vigne, in Galluccio. Rustic rooms, a restaurant, a garden and a panoramic terrace. A good place to eat well in the countryside, with some reservations about service and cleanliness.

Sannio and Irpinia

The pace slows down here, among villages and country roads. These are places to choose for calm, not for evening life.

  • B&B Dietro l'Angolo, in Benevento. A simple place near the Roman arch and theatre, with air-conditioned rooms, a private bathroom and parking on site.
  • B&B Fusaro Toramazzone, in Sant'Agata de' Goti. Surrounded by greenery, with a garden, a terrace and parking. Few reviews, but almost all enthusiastic.
  • Sentieri Luminosi, in Traugnano. An apartment with a bedroom, living room, fitted kitchen, a terrace with a view and a garden, for anyone looking for quiet and walks.
  • B&B Studio Notte, in Telese. Simple rooms, Wi-Fi, a garden and free parking, a short walk from the main street. Honest prices, but do not expect modern rooms.
  • Agriturismo a Casa di Susanna, in Santo Stefano del Sole. A seasonal pool, a restaurant and rooms with separate entrances. Welcome and calm are appreciated; opinions on the food are not unanimous.

Salerno and Cilento

The Cilento is the most seaside and slowest part of the region, made up of small family-run places. Salerno is the gateway for anyone without a car.

  • Kriò Suite, in Salerno. In an ancient palazzo a short walk from Via dei Mercanti, the sea and the station. Rooms are spacious, but be prepared for street noise and access via an app.
  • Hotel la Caravella, in Agropoli. Close to the centre and the marina, with rooms overlooking the gulf, breakfast included and a solarium with a seasonal pool.
  • B&B Posidonia, in Santa Maria di Castellabate. A terrace, a garden and private parking, with the sea and the centre within walking distance and a well-prepared breakfast.
  • B&B La Meriggia, in Pisciotta. In the locality of Caprioli, almost opposite the beach, with spacious rooms, a generous breakfast and private parking.
  • B&B Villa Del Regno, in Centola. A terrace and garden overlooking the sea at Palinuro. I would pick it for the quiet and the view, if you are travelling by car.
  • Agriturismo Le Prunelle, in Cannalonga. Among the olive trees, with rooms and apartments that have a terrace or balcony. A base for walks and day trips towards the Amalfi Coast.

What kind of accommodation you find in Campania

In Campania bed and breakfasts dominate, small and almost always family-run. Alongside them there are a few hotels, three farm stays and a hostel.

B&Bs are the most common choice in both towns and on the coast, and their strong point is often parking or air conditioning rather than luxury. Hotels sit where logistics demand, near stations, ports or motorways, and suit practical stopovers. Farm stays are outside the towns, with a restaurant or local produce, and without a car you will not get there. The hostel in Portici is the only option for anyone on a tight budget who wants company.

Which place to choose depending on your trip

The choice depends mostly on how you get around. Without a car, stay in the city or near a station; with one, the region opens up.

When to visit Campania and how to get around

For cities and ruins I choose spring and autumn, when walking is pleasant and sightseeing does not feel like hard work. Summer is the season for the sea, especially in Cilento, but on the coast you will meet the crowds, so book well in advance.

In Naples the metro and trains are enough to reach the monuments and to get to Pompeii and Portici. Caserta and Salerno are also easy to reach by train. For the Sannio, Irpinia and Cilento, though, you need a car, because villages and small beaches are far from the stations. From the port of Pozzuoli you can sail to Ischia and Procida.

What to check before booking in Campania

The best places in the region are the small ones, and for that very reason it pays to read the reviews carefully. At some places opinions on cleanliness and service are very divided.

  • Check how to get there and where to leave the car, especially in the historic centres.
  • Check whether breakfast is served on site or at a nearby bar, as happens at some places in Caserta.
  • Read recent comments on cleanliness and noise before choosing a hostel, a central B&B or a place with mixed reviews.
  • If you are heading to the countryside or the Cilento coast, ask how to get there and plan on having a car.
