Casa Marino Pension in Cabrafigal, a family guesthouse near Navia

Casa Marino Pension is a family guesthouse in Cabrafigal, Asturias, near Navia and Puerto de Vega. It has a garden, free parking and a homemade breakfast. It suits calm travellers on a budget who do not need big rooms or good soundproofing.
Mapiola is a travel blog: this is not the official website of Casa Marino Pension.
Where Casa Marino Pension is and how to get there
Casa Marino Pension is in Cabrafigal, in the west of Asturias, on the road to Fuentes. It is an independent house in a quiet rural setting, close to villages such as Navia and Puerto de Vega. A car is the easiest way to get around, and it has free private parking.
Guests say you can walk to Puerto de Vega, that there is a cider house nearby and that the beach is a short drive away. Asturias airport is about 63 km away, so if you fly in you face a long drive.
What the rooms are like
The rooms are small but clean, bright and have comfortable beds, according to reviews. Each one has a view of the garden, a desk, a flat-screen TV, a private bathroom, a wardrobe, bed linen, towels and free wifi.
The bathrooms are another matter. Several guests describe them as small or narrow, although they do the job. Gel and shampoo are provided, which one guest appreciated as one of the few places still doing it. There is no hairdryer in the rooms, but you can ask for one. There are stairs up to the rooms, although the building has ramps to its different floors.
There is also a garden, a terrace, a shared lounge, a tourist information desk, luggage storage and a children's play area, which explains why many people think of it as a guesthouse that does not feel like one.
The breakfast and what guests like most
On Google the rating is 4.4 from 132 reviews. The overall tone is very good, and four points keep coming up.
- The welcome. The owners are a friendly, attentive couple who recommend places to visit and even book a table for you.
- The breakfast. Homemade sponge cake, toast, a pastry, coffee with milk and fresh juice. Several guests call it generous and cheap for what it is.
- The cleanliness. Towels and bed linen are changed daily, which surprised several guests.
- The value for money. Described as unbeatable for a quiet getaway.
What to know before booking
The most repeated downside is the noise. One guest wrote at two in the morning because there was no sound insulation and everything could be heard from other guests. If you sleep badly with noise, think about this first.
There is also a very harsh review, from some months ago, which mentions a smell of damp and mould in the bathroom and dirty bed linen, and says the photos do not match. It is the only one saying something like this among those I have read, and it clashes with dozens that praise the cleanliness, but I am not ignoring it. Another opinion simply notes that the rooms and bathroom are a little uncomfortable.
| The good points | Worth knowing |
|---|---|
| Friendly owners and homemade breakfast | Small rooms and bathrooms |
| Free parking and a quiet setting | Little sound insulation |
| Daily cleaning and comfortable beds | Stairs up to the rooms |
| Play area and garden | No hairdryer, but one can be lent |
Who it suits and what to do in the area
I would choose Casa Marino Pension for a weekend or a route along the Asturian coast on a tight budget, or for travelling with children who can make use of the garden and play area. It is not for anyone who wants large rooms, a spacious bathroom or total silence.
From Cabrafigal you can visit Navia and Puerto de Vega, try the local cider and walk or cycle the routes. If you want to compare another option in Asturias, there is the Hotel y Apartamentos Cuevas del Mar in Nueva, about which I can only give you the name and the village.
