Vivienda Turística Los Sitios, a large flat near the Gaudí Palace

Vivienda Turística Los Sitios in Astorga

Vivienda Turística Los Sitios is a three-bedroom flat with two bathrooms in the centre of Astorga, León, a short walk from the Gaudí Palace and the cathedral. It suits groups and families who want space and a terrace, as long as they read the cleaning reviews carefully first.

Mapiola is a travel blog: this is not the official website of Vivienda Turística Los Sitios.

Where Vivienda Turística Los Sitios is and how to get there

Vivienda Turística Los Sitios is on Calle Los Sitios, number 1, first floor B, in the centre of Astorga, in the province of León. Most of what there is to see in the town is within walking distance, and that is its best asset.

According to the listing, Gaudí's Episcopal Palace is about 150 m away, and the cathedral and the Roman walls about 250 m. One Google review mentions only three minutes to the palace, which fits those figures. If you come by car, the listing mentions parking nearby, although I cannot tell whether it is paid or free.

What the flat is like inside

It is an entire flat with three bedrooms, two bathrooms with showers and a living room with a sofa and a flat-screen TV. For a group, that is far more comfortable than spreading out across several hotel rooms.

The equipped kitchen has a fridge, microwave, oven, dishwasher and utensils. The listing also mentions free wifi, a balcony, a terrace, city views, access to the courtyard and garden, and towels and bed linen. There is a lift, which helps with luggage, and a left-luggage facility.

  • The terrace. Several guests highlight the furnished terrace and the overall size of the flat.
  • The bathrooms. Two bathrooms are a real luxury when you travel with friends or children.
  • The kitchen. Useful if you want to eat in a couple of nights.

What guests say about Los Sitios

The Google rating is 3.8 out of 5, from only 4 reviews. That is a very small sample, and the voices point in opposite directions, so it is worth reading with care.

The two oldest reviews, from two years ago, are enthusiastic. They describe a clean, central, spacious, modern and well-decorated flat, and very good service before, during and after the stay. One of them stresses how close Gaudí's palace is.

The most recent review, from about six months ago, gives one star. It says the flat was dirty and the sheets had not been changed, and it complains about calls from the owner during and after the stay. It is a single opinion, but it is the most recent one and I would not ignore it.

What to know before booking

The flat has great potential for its location and size, but the opinions are not uniform. These are the points I would look at before paying.

  • Cleanliness. This is the most debated point. Two older reviews praise it and one recent review criticises it harshly. If you book, write first to ask how the flat is prepared.
  • Communication with the owner. One guest felt harassed by the calls. Make clear from the start how many people are travelling.
  • The flat is on the first floor, flat B. The listing mentions a lift, but confirm it if you have mobility issues.
  • Few reviews. With so few ratings, the score is not very reliable.

The listing also mentions a reinforced hygiene service. I have no way of checking how it is applied, so I present it as a detail from the listing and not as a guarantee.

Who Vivienda Turística Los Sitios suits

I would choose it for a group of friends or a family who want a weekend in Astorga without taking the car, with their own kitchen and terrace. Given its size, it makes little sense for a couple who only want a nice room.

I would not recommend it to anyone for whom cleanliness is the top priority, unless the owner gives a clear answer beforehand. If you prefer a hotel with reception, take a look at Hostal Restaurante Catalina de Austria, in Torquemada or Hotel Mirador del Arlanzón, in Los Balbases, although both are in other parts of Castile and León.

What to see in Astorga

Astorga is a classic stop on the Camino de Santiago and has a lot to see in a small space. From the flat you can walk to Gaudí's Episcopal Palace, the cathedral and the Roman walls.

The town is also known for its chocolate and for cocido maragato, a good excuse to sit down and eat without rushing. I would set aside one morning for the palace and the cathedral, and the afternoon for wandering the old town and the walls.
