Hostal Yuste in Garganta la Olla, simple, quiet and with a fridge

Hostal Yuste is a simple guesthouse in Garganta la Olla, in the La Vera area of Cáceres. It offers rooms with a private bathroom, a fridge and a microwave, and plenty of quiet. It suits hikers, motorbike riders and couples on a tight budget who want calm, not someone who needs good soundproofing.
Mapiola is a travel blog: this is not the official website of Hostal Yuste.
Where Hostal Yuste is and how to get there
Hostal Yuste is in Garganta la Olla, a town in the province of Cáceres, in Extremadura, on Avenida de la Libertad. Guests place it on the edge of town, a few minutes' walk from the centre, and say you can park without any trouble at the entrance. It is a good base for the La Vera area and the Jerte valley.
According to the listing, the Monasterio de Yuste is 11 km away. A car helps you get around the area, although several guests say you can do almost everything on foot in the village, up as far as the gorge. The nearest airport listed is Salamanca, 178 km away, so flying in is not the practical option.
What the rooms are like
The rooms at Hostal Yuste are simple, clean and cover the basics well. They have air conditioning, heating, a flat-screen TV, a desk, bed linen and towels, and a private bathroom with a bath and toiletries. Some look out onto a balcony with mountain views, or onto a terrace.
What guests mention most, and what I like most, is the basic kitchen kit. There is a fridge, microwave and toaster, with plates and cutlery, which is handy for a first coffee before heading out on a walk or for a quick dinner without going down to the village. One review misses a kettle. The wifi is free and there is a tourist information desk.
Size varies. One guest describes a very spacious room with a kitchen included, while friends in another review got a smaller and cheaper one. If space matters to you, ask which room you will be given.
What guests highlight
Google rates it 4.1 from 182 reviews. Most reviews are very positive, and the same points keep coming up.
- The quiet. Several guests talk about a peaceful place, ideal for a few days of rest.
- The cleanliness. Mentioned again and again, along with comfortable beds.
- The owners. Friendly and happy to help, with tips on viewpoints and places to see. One guest was able to keep their motorbike in the garage.
- Value for money. Described as very competitive, with no great luxuries.
- The surroundings with children. There is a children's playground right opposite, and restaurants and a grocery shop nearby.
What to know before booking
The main downside is the sound insulation. Several reviews, including positive ones, say you can hear everything from the rest of the building, and one mentions a constant noise, like a machine or running water, that broke their sleep. The quiet of the village does not make up for what you hear along the corridor.
Other complaints in the lower scores are about the towels, which are not changed every day and, according to one review, cost extra if you want them sooner, and about hot water, which did not run hot for one shower. One person also describes an unpleasant manner from the person in charge, against many others who praise the opposite. These are minority views, but I mention them so you can decide with the full picture.
| The good points | Worth knowing |
|---|---|
| Fridge, microwave and toaster in the room | Little sound insulation |
| Clean rooms and comfortable beds | Towels not changed every day |
| Friendly owners and local tips | Some trouble with hot water |
| Easy parking and a quiet setting | A little outside the centre |
Who it suits and what to do in the area
I would choose Hostal Yuste if you are walking around the region, travelling by motorbike or looking for a cheap, quiet place to sleep and not much else. I also see it working well with children, because of the playground opposite. I would not recommend it if you are a light sleeper or expect a hotel with services.
Garganta la Olla is a pretty village, according to guests, and you can walk to the larger gorge from there. Nearby there are other gorges and viewpoints, the Monasterio de Yuste and the Garganta de los Infiernos Nature Reserve. Ask the owners, who, according to the reviews, explain very well where to stop.
