Domus Maggiore, rooms with a view of Santa Maria Maggiore

Domus Maggiore is a small guesthouse in Rome, Lazio, on Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore and a few minutes' walk from Termini. Rooms are well kept, some look onto the basilica, and breakfast is served at the pastry shop opposite. It suits short stays for couples or solo travellers, less so for anyone wanting space.
Mapiola is a travel blog: this is not the official website of Domus Maggiore.
Where Domus Maggiore is and how to get there
Domus Maggiore is in Rome, on Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore, and its location is its real calling card. The basilica is right in front of it, and Termini station, with the metro, is a few minutes on foot.
If you arrive by train it is a real advantage: you get off, walk, and you are already in your room, with no taxi and no changes. Several guests value exactly this balance, being close to Termini without ending up in the neglected streets around the station. The Teatro Brancaccio is nearby too.
Rione Monti is a stone's throw away, and more than one guest has fallen for it. If you want a base for exploring Rome, in Lazio, without taking a car, Domus Maggiore has the kind of location you are looking for.
What the rooms are like
The rooms at Domus Maggiore are decorated in a classic style and offer the basic comfort you would expect today. Some look directly onto Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore, with a view of the basilica that many guests remember fondly.
- Air conditioning and LCD TV
- Private bathroom or one outside the room, with shower, hairdryer and toiletry set
- Free Wi-Fi
- Basilica view from some rooms
Opinions on size are mixed. Some find the room spacious and clean, others speak of very well kept rooms that are not very large. I would take them for what they are: simple, tidy rooms in which to rest after a day on foot around Rome.
If the view over the square matters to you, ask for it specifically when booking, because not every room has one.
What guests say
On Google, Domus Maggiore has a rating of 4.5 from 69 reviews, and the overall tone is very positive. These are the themes that come up most often.
- Many guests praise the kindness of the people who run the place and the feeling of being at home.
- The cleanliness of the rooms is mentioned more than once.
- Guests like the view over the square and the basilica, when the room has one.
- The breakfast, with sweet and savoury options, is considered generous and varied.
There are criticisms and I will report them. One guest complains of a tiny bathroom with an old, very narrow shower, and a more recent review describes a check-in done at a bar counter, a room smelling of mould and a double bed that felt like a slightly wider single, too small for a couple. It is an isolated opinion among many positive ones, but it is also the most recent, and I would not ignore it.
What to know before booking
Domus Maggiore in Rome is a good choice if you know what to expect. These are the points that, reading the reviews, I think are worth clarifying first.
- Compact spaces. Rooms and bathrooms are not large, and for two people a narrow bed can become a problem.
- Bathroom inside or outside the room. It depends on the room, so check which one you are booking.
- Welcome and breakfast. Both revolve around the bar and pastry shop attached to the property, so if you arrive in the rain or at an unusual hour, it is worth asking in advance how it works.
- Older reviews. Many of the most enthusiastic comments are a few years old, so it is worth reading the more recent ones too.
None of these are deal breakers, but it is better to know them before arriving than to discover them at the door.
Who it suits
Domus Maggiore is designed for people who want to stay in central Rome, near Termini, without high expectations of space. I would choose it for a weekend, a work trip or a short stop, alone or as a couple, when the room is mainly for sleeping.
I would recommend it less to anyone looking for a large room or a generous double bed, because that is exactly where the criticism comes from.
If, on the other hand, Rome is just one stop and you then prefer to leave the city, take a look at B&B A Casa di Nonna in Massa D'Albe, in Abruzzo: a very different alternative in atmosphere.
What to do around Domus Maggiore in Rome
Almost everything around Domus Maggiore is on foot. The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is right in front, and the Monti neighbourhood, with its little streets, is just across the road.
Termini is the reference point for metro and trains, and from there you can get to the rest of Rome. Several guests say they are close to many tourist attractions and the city's most important monuments, and describe the area as characterful.
My suggestion: an evening stroll around the neighbourhood, breakfast at the pastry shop linked to the property and, for long days, the metro from Termini to the great classics. No complicated plans, because the location does most of the work.
