B&B San Pellegrino, historic house in the medieval quarter

B&B San Pellegrino is a place to stay in the medieval quarter of San Pellegrino, in the historic centre of Viterbo, in Lazio. It occupies a historic house with a frescoed hall and a fireplace. I recommend it to anyone who wants to walk the centre and loves period settings, less so for total silence or easy stairs.
Mapiola is a travel blog: this is not the official website of B&B San Pellegrino.
Where B&B San Pellegrino is in Viterbo
B&B San Pellegrino is in the historic centre of Viterbo, right in the medieval quarter of San Pellegrino, in Lazio. Guests describe it as quiet and a few minutes' walk from the city's finest monuments.
It is also a convenient base for exploring the Tuscia. According to the description, Villa Lante is 6.1 km away, the Parco dei Mostri in Bomarzo 21 km and Civita di Bagnoregio 33 km. Those arriving by car can use, according to one guest, a large free car park near the lift that leads to Piazza San Lorenzo, a few minutes from the B&B. From Rome, Fiumicino airport is about 110 km away.
What the rooms and spaces are like
B&B San Pellegrino occupies a period manor house, carefully renovated. Reviews talk about cosy rooms furnished with antiques, some with themes, and spaces that are unusual for a B&B. The highlight is the hall with its large frescoed fireplace, where breakfast is served.
The description mentions a flat with a bedroom, a living room and a fitted kitchen, with fridge, utensils and coffee machine. The bathroom has a bidet and shower, the TV is flat-screen with cable channels and the Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Some guests also mention air conditioning and a spacious bedroom.
One review recalls that there are only three double rooms, so on public holidays it fills up quickly. If you have a specific date in mind, get in touch in advance.
What guests say about B&B San Pellegrino
On Google the rating is 4.5 out of 5, with 72 reviews. Many of them are not very recent, but they paint a fairly clear picture.
- The atmosphere. Several people talk about a historic house kept beautifully, with a fireplace and a hall that seem to come out of a castle.
- Breakfast. In several reviews it is generous and varied, although one person considered it mediocre.
- The welcome. The owner is described as warm and helpful, ready to lend a hand with special requests and getting around.
- The location. Very central, handy for events such as Ludika 1243 or for walking the medieval quarter.
What to know before booking
Here the downsides matter, and I found three. The first is the stairs, the second is cleaning and the third is the sound insulation between rooms.
| What guests like | What to know |
|---|---|
| Historic house with a frescoed hall | Two significant flights of stairs to reach the rooms |
| Central position in the medieval quarter | Two critical reviews mention cleaning that needs to improve |
| Generous breakfast for many guests | Thin partition walls between rooms, according to one guest |
The two critical reviews are old, and the others are almost all positive about cleanliness, so take this with a pinch of salt. However, the stairs are also mentioned by those who are satisfied, and in an old house they cannot be changed. If you have mobility issues or heavy luggage, ask how arrival works.
Who I recommend it for
I would choose B&B San Pellegrino for a weekend in Viterbo as a couple, wanting to sleep somewhere with character and walk around the centre. It also suits anyone travelling for work or for a longer stay, since there is a fitted kitchen.
I would not recommend it to anyone who wants absolute silence, to anyone who struggles with stairs, or to anyone looking for modern, minimalist rooms.
If you want to compare with other bases in Lazio, look at the Affittacamere La Bertina in Montefiascone, the Agriturismo La Piantata in Bolsena or the Agriturismo Casale Loreto in Corchiano.
What to do in Viterbo and around
Viterbo is very walkable, and guests remember events such as San Pellegrino in Fiore, the Macchina di Santa Rosa and Ludika 1243, with local produce, trattorias and stalls. For a trip by car there are Villa Lante, Bomarzo and Civita di Bagnoregio.
These are my own ideas, not services of the property. If you want to stay here during an event, book well in advance, because there are few rooms.
